Thanks to everyone for your help with this collaboration. Your participation is very valuable to us. Our research would not be possible without your help. In August 2020, we asked for help with two pilot projects to develop a test of Bird Species Recognition. If you contributed to these tests you should find your scores below. Your results may differ substantially from your previous scores recorded on facial recognition research, please do not be disheartened. The tests were hard.

Bird Species Recognition Pilot Test 1 (14th of August 2020 – 30th of August 2020)

Pilot 1 (see Figure 1) consisted of images of different bird species. Participants viewed 25 images of different bird species in Part 1. They then proceeded to view 50 images of different bird species in Part 2. Half of the images in Part 2 were ‘NEW’ (participants had not seen the bird species in Part 1), whilst the other half were ‘OLD’ (participants had seen the bird species in Part 1). Data collected consisted of participants total scores (out of 50).

Bird Species Recognition Pilot Test 2 (25th of August – 3rd of September)

Pilot 2 (see Figure 2) also consisted of images of different bird species, however, new bird species that were thought to be more memorable replaced bird species from Pilot 1 that scored noticeably lower than other bird species (suggesting they were hard to recognise). It was decided that said replacement bird species were more memorable based on the fact that they had brighter colours (orange, red, or blue) which appeared to be common features of the bird species that scored higher in Pilot 1. We thought this test would be easier because of the changes, but obviously we needed to do more work if you look at Figures 1 and 2.
